Translational medicine - defined as the connection between basic research and clinical treatment, emphasizes the application from laboratory to clinical, and transforms the achievements of medical research into clinical practical treatment techniques, so as to continuously improve clinical diagnosis. This concept was formally put forward by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2003 in order to use the limited research funds of NIH to solve practical clinical problems. Since 2009, translational medicine research centers have been established in many universities in China. Translational medicine also represents a new concept of modern medical model.
With the rapid development of modern chemistry, biology and Life Sciences, however, the speed of new drug research and development has shown the opposite trend. The pharmaceutical giants are at a loss. On the other hand, a lack of resources, experience and support had troubled many scientists who do basic research to have their scientific research achievements being transformed into useful clinical achievements. This webinar will discuss the reason why the existing system is not very effective, and would there be a better mechanism to promote the cooperation between basic scientific research and pharmaceutical R &D industry in initiating a new revolution in pharmaceutical field?
